The ornate walls of One Eyed Jacks' 300-odd-capacity showroom are edged with scarlet sparkle-vinyl banquettes and hung with mid-20th-century pinup nudes painted on black velvet -- a louche, swank atmosphere appropriate to its history as an old French Quarter movie house and reputed speakeasy, the latter of which apparently left the club with a pair of ghosts. A slightly raked floor means there's not a bad sightline in the room, which is the premier Downtown New Orleans destination for touring indie acts, hip local bands, and DJ nights, like the long-running and beloved Thursday night "Fast Times" '80s dance party. College kids mix with old punks and visitors, too, who are lucky enough to wander into the coolest spot in the touristy Quarter. Brief history lesson: back in the early 1900s, a man named Philip Duprey started the Worcester Lunch Car Company, which had the peculiar gig of just building “lunch cars” or diners. The company lasted 51 years, making over 600 in that time, including one that, since 1946, has sat in Gardiner, Maine. As you may’ve guessed from every other clue, that is now A 1, and though the scene inside does feel a bit like a time capsule, the food is very much up-to-date, and delicious (what other diners are regularly whipping up Korean vegetable pancakes with spicy green beans, huh?!?), though -- being that it is Maine -- we prefer to keep it simple with their light, crispy local blueberry pancakes. This 1926 Craftsman double bungalow (duplex) has all the detail and flexibility its architectural style suggests. The hand crafted woodwork that frames the home's interior, goes from dark to light as you move through the house, from a deep walnut framing the sunporch, living room, and dining room, to the original oak cabinetry of the kitchen, to the bright scrubbed pine in both bedrooms. This property can sleep six quite comfortably, eight with just a bit of imagination. The master bedroom has a queen bed as well as a comfy chair and table for reading or lounging. The second bedroom has a full bed, a functional desk, a chair and bookshelf. We encourage guests to borrow or trade books from the bookshelf as their interests dictate. The open sun porch has a pullout sofa bed (queen), vintage swivel chair and lots of windows and plants. Perfect for sitting, talking, reading or gazing. We have an additional deluxe queen size air mattress (the double decker) which can fit on the opposite end of the sunporch for larger parties. The dining table (built in the same period as the house) is solid walnut with an Art Deco Sunburst pattern and seating for 8. The kitchen is functional for cooking and equipped with pots, pans, cutlery and other utensils. There are sufficient table settings, plates, bowls, glasses, etc to serve eight. Guests will also find a breakfast basket filled with pastries fruits yogurts orange juice, etc...enough for your entire party's first breakfast in your temporary home. Coffee and tea are always provided. The backyard is partially enclosed with a privacy fence and has a patio table and chairs with umbrella. Great for barbecuing or just sitting and relaxing from Spring through Fall. There is also an enclosed back porch with screened windows looking out over the backyard. We have four adult bikes and two kids bikes for guests to use for leisure or general transportation. 15 minutes ride to The Lakes or downtown via the bike lanes. If biking isn't your preferred mode of transportation, We are located only one block off the Bloomington Avenue and 38th street bus lines (#14 and 23)) and about 10 blocks from the light rail.

The Saenger Theatre

Designed by Emile Weil, the Saenger Theatre was built by Julian Saenger in 1927 for the theretofore unheard of price of $2.5 million dollars. Advertisements of the day described it as “an acre of seats in a garden of Florentine splendor”. Today, the interior atmospheric design creates a magnificent 15th century Italian courtyard and gardens, with arched surroundings, columns and decorative moldings. The suspension of disbelief is completed by a blue domed “sky” ceiling complete with twinkling stars. Greek and Roman statuary line the walls and statues of Venus stand on pedestals along the upper rim of the auditorium.

In 2005, the Saenger Theatre was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Yet within months of the storm, a groundswell of interest in the renovation and reopening of the theatre began to grow, and, in December 2011; the agreements to restore the theatre were finalized. The $53 million project serves to anchor the revitalization of Canal Street and the New Orleans Central Business District and act as an economic generator attracting visitors from New Orleans and the Gulf South region to enjoy the very finest live entertainment available. Restoration

The Saenger Theatre reopened its doors in September 2013. The Saenger Theatre restoration was a National Rehabilitation Tax Credit project, whose scope of construction served to authentically restore this historic 1927 movie palace, and transform it into a first class state-of-the-art performing arts theatre. The restored Saenger Theatre features beautifully restored lobbies and auditorium seating area with carpeting and lighting fixtures recreated from the originals. Expanded restrooms and concessions facilities ensure the greatest comfort for our patrons. The expanded theatre stage house will be equipped with state-of-the-art theatrical systems ensuring the Saenger will be the most technically advanced theatre in the South. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom), find your seat and read the program before the show starts.

Valet parking is available for Saenger Theatre Grand Suite and Club Seat ticket holders only.

Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Saenger Theatre via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

Recording devices and cameras are not permitted in the theatre.

Children under the age of six are encouraged to attend only special children’s theatre events. Everyone entering the theatre must have a ticket regardless of age. For the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, children who are disruptive to other guests will be asked to leave the seating area. Parents should use their discretion when deciding what shows are appropriate for children. A Full-Service Bar is offered at all performances. Beverages include wine, beer, soft drinks, mixed drinks, champagne, margaritas, coffee, juice and water. Candy is also available. Outside food and beverage are not permitted in the theatre.

Merchandise is sold in the theatre lobby, if the tour is selling merchandise.

Smoking is not permitted in any area of the Saenger Theatre. Smoking patios are designated outside the main entrance of both theatres.

Assistive listening devices are available for the hearing impaired. Patrons must present a valid driver's license or valid state identification when checking out units.

The Saenger Theatre will offer live interpretation performances for the hearing impaired community for many of the Broadway in New Orleans series productions. This service will typically be offered during Sunday matinee performances. For Live interpreting dates and times for specific performances, please inquire at the Theatre Box Office. Productions without dialogue may not offer Open Captioning.

The Saenger Theatre does offer accessible seating. Accessible seats may be purchased by phone or online through Ticketmaster.

We rarely cancel performances due to weather. In cases of inclement weather, we strongly recommend that patrons use public transportation where possible, travel safely and allow plenty of time to arrive at the theatre on time. During inclement weather, updates will also be posted on saengernola.com and the Saenger Facebook page. We recommend that patrons check these sites frequently if there is a pending or occurring storm.

USS Midway Museum

Buses can drop groups off at our ticket office, but cannot stage on Navy Pier. Vehicles over 18 feet long are not allowed to park on Navy Pier. The closest large-vehicle parking is in metered spaces along Pacific Coast Highway. Front-row handicapped parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Santa Fe Train Depot and MTS trolley station are a short 5 minute walk to the USS Midway. The Museum is easily accessible by train, coaster and trolley!

Yes, there really was an Ann Sather. In the 1940s, a vivacious career woman named Ann Sather decided that what she really wanted to do was own and run a restaurant. Her restaurant. A place where people could come for generous homemade meals, warm hospitality and know the moment they came in the door they went from being a customer to becoming a friend. [gallery type="rectangular" link="none" size="full" ids="1763,1764,1765,1766,1767"] So, in 1945, when the Swedish owners of a restaurant located on Belmont decided to retire, Ann quit her job of 22 years, pooled her life savings and bought herself a diner known today as Ann Sather Restaurant. For 35 years Ann ran the diner herself. Her devotion to wholesome, made-from-scratch food, low prices, friendly service and hard work became legendary in the Lakeview neighborhood and beyond. In 1981, after searching for a successor who would meet her stringent demands for quality and remain devoted to her patrons, Ann sold the restaurant to Tom Tunney, a 24-year-old graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Tom apprenticed with Ann for a year learning the business from top to bottom. Armed with culinary training, Tom, the son of Irish immigrants who grew up on Chicago’s Southside, was learning all of the best Scandinavian cooking secrets in town. Although Ann Sather sadly passed away in 1996, her spirit still prevails in the “good food, good friends and good conversation” philosophy that has made her restaurants famous. She still looks over us all from her portrait hanging in the dining room. During the last 35 years, Tom has expanded the business to include the most famous cinnamon rolls and breakfast in town, two additional restaurants and Ann Sather Corporate and Special Event Catering, which is well-known for its corporate and special events, banquets, business breakfasts and lunches and special deliveries.

The Getty Center, in Los Angeles, California, is a campus of the Getty Museum and other programs of the Getty Trust. The $1.3 billion Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997[2] and is well known for its architecture, gardens, and views overlooking Los Angeles. The Center sits atop a hill connected to a visitors' parking garage at the bottom of the hill by a three-car, cable-pulled hovertrain funicular. The good news is that there really isn't a "bad" time to visit Hawaii and your plans will probably lead to a great vacation in the Aloha State. But there are things to consider when you are planning your vacation that are affected by the season. Knowing these travel facts will help you know what to expect if you are arriving in the summer, and it might even make you reevaluate your dates.

Hawaii has two seasons worth mentioning -- summer and winter. And winter is better here than summers are in most places. Summer is the dry season in Hawaii, and winter is the rainy season. Don't expect too much variance in the weather during your trip. There is a reason they call this place paradise. It's mostly sunny, and a few scattered showers fall "up mauka," at higher elevations, just about every day. In short, it's really nice most of the time. The weather does vary somewhat when it comes to rain. Rarely do you have long downpours for days on end, but rain is definitely going to affect you more if you are staying at higher elevations, particularly on the windward (generally the eastern and northern) sides of the islands. On the leeward sides of the islands, you can expect sunny days and dry conditions normally. Temperatures year-round in Hawaii stay between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. In the summer, you can expect some 90-degree days, but weather much hotter than 90 is fairly rare. Hurricane season runs through the summer, but landfall for these storms is rare in Hawaii. The last hurricane to hit Hawaii was Iniki in 1992.

Because this is a tropical climate, dress comfortably and cool. Shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops (locally known as slippas), sundresses and, of course, Aloha shirts are the norm. No, it's not just something you see on television: The men in Hawaii wear flowery Aloha shirts on a regular basis, even for work. And most restaurants, except the most formal, are liberal in their attire requirements.

The summer in Hawaii is certainly not the peak season. The peak in Hawaii runs from mid-December through mid-April as people escape their cold hometowns across the Northern Hemisphere. But the summer falls somewhere between peak season and low season. From the time schoolchildren are dismissed for summer until the beginning of August, beaches can be quite crowded, and prices for flights, hotels and other services on the islands can go up considerably.

If you want to visit in the summer but do not want to contend with the masses and the higher prices, try to come on the front end or the tail end of summer. The shoulder season happens in the very early days of summer, actually late spring, before all the kids are out of school. It happens again at the end of the summer as schools are resuming classes. Family vacations slow down, making it less crowded, and airlines and hotels are always offering lower-priced deals to entice visitors as the momentum of tourist season slows.

The good news about Hawaii is that almost everything you can do during any other time of year is also available in the summer. There are only a couple of exceptions to this rule. Typically the surf is not up during the summer. So no big sets will be rolling in for you to paddle into. Also, the snows that are often visible on top of the volcanoes of the Big Island and Maui are melted away, meaning you'll miss some of the most beautiful sights. But don't worry: There are plenty more to choose from. Also, calm seas are probably good news for most tourists. Besides, there's always the possibility of a bump in the surf report even in summer. Snorkeling, hiking, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and a plethora of other local activities are as good or better in the summer.

I’m about to share my full travel details to Vietnam’s hidden gem. This is a detailed Ninh Binh itinerary to see this fascinating place in two magical days.Some of the most memorable days of my 2-month backpacking trip in Asia were spent in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. The whole province is an extremely low-key and amazingly scenic place, yet still not packed with tourists. It’s the perfect place to get to know the real authentic Vietnam.Being a recently discovered travel destination, information online about Ninh Binh is still scarce and confusing. To make things worse, Google Maps can mislead you, and the locals struggle to understand English.It can be challenging to plan a trip independently to Ninh Binh. It's still WAY better than to explore Ninh Binh on a soulless and rushed organized tour together with dozens of other travelers.That’s why I’ve shared a complete Ninh Binh guide before. The itinerary is based on my own trip in December 2016. I spent a total of 2,5 days exploring Ninh Binh and could’ve easily stayed more!
It’s for independent travelers making their own way in Ninh Binh. This is the way it should be explored!
It’s suited if you have your own wheels, whether is a bike or a motorbike. I strongly recommend the latter, at least on the first day.
It’s NOT a rushed itinerary. You can squeeze in more places if you want. However I think is important to allow some time to really take in the scenery, explore the area calmly and even get wonderfully lost!

What to do in Ninh Binh – 2-Day Itinerary

Yes, two days. Anything less and you’ll need to cut down on some sights and/or rush your trip. And who the hell wants to stress on the countryside?!There are also some additional sights in case you’ve got more time or want to switch up something.

Day 1 in Ninh Binh

I know these shopping lists don’t help much, so now let’s go in detail about these sights!

Day 1 in Ninh Binh

This first day only has 3 places, but each one of them will need a couple of hours to explore. I strongly suggest you get around on a motorbike as distances between these sights are significant.

Trang An

[embed]https://youtu.be/BanhMy-ZWu0[/embed] A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Trang An Landscape Complex is an impressive set of large limestone karst cliffs covered by forest. In the entire area, you can find temples, dozens of valleys and about 50 different caves.The best way to enjoy this inspiring scenery is to take a boat ride. A lady rower will row the boat for you, the technique they use to maneuver the boat inside the underwater caves is truly amazing. It’s unreal the amount of effort these ladies have to put every day for a living.Since the whole trip lasts for about 2 hours (!), I helped the rower for some time by using the spare oars. Trang An was definitely the main highlight of Ninh Binh and apparently a much more beautiful and relaxing ride than Tam Coc‘s (see below). Being surrounded by the huge mountains in almost every direction while on a tiny boat is truly a spectacular feeling. Don’t miss this!

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

[caption id="attachment_2003" align="alignnone" width="1067"] Hoa Lu Ancient Capital[/caption] Hoa Lu is the ancient capital of the Dinh and Le dynasties, dating back to the 11th century. It’s located roughly 14km from Ninh Binh and close to the Trang A boat ride.Today, the remains of this ancient city are just that: remains. The buildings still standing include the royal temples of Dinh Tien Huang, housing a statue of Emperor Dinh Bo Linh and his sons as well as the royal temple of the early Le Dynasty. Still, more than the buildings or temples, I found Hoa Lu to be beautiful because of the scenery. The ruins are just too rainy to be memorable IMHO. It’s still worth to have a stroll around and imagine how the city was a millennium ago.

Bai Dinh Pagoda

[caption id="attachment_2006" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Bai Dinh pagoda is the largest pagoda in Southeast Asia[/caption] Located 15km away from Ninh Binh city in a mountain area, Bai Dinh Pagoda is a HUGE religious complex. In fact, everything is massive here. Within the 539-hectare premises, there are 5,000 Buddha statues, a 36-ton bronze bell and dozens of Buddhist temples, each more opulent than the other. Usually, visitors explore the compound by electric car (!).It’s the absolute largest pagoda in South East Asia. Climbing to the top gives you an amazing open view over the Ninh Binh province.Just like Ninh Binh in general, I honestly don’t know how Bai Dinh can fall this much under the radar. But it does and I guess that’s a good thing!

Day 2 in Ninh Binh

Contrarily to the first day, this one can be done on a bike as distances are shorter. All the sights are in or around Tam Coc.

Tam Coc Rice Fields

[caption id="attachment_1999" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Tam Coc aannd you’re drawn into the authentic Vietnam. Photo By: geekyexplorer[/caption] The boat ride in the Tam Coc rice fields is the main reason tourists come to Ninh Binh. The area is surrounded by hundreds of stony outcrops similar to the ones found in Halong Bay. For this reason, the area is nicknamed “Halong in Land”. I skipped the boat ride when I heard it’s a hotspot for scams and hawkers. Apart from the ticket fee, the rowers often “ask” (aka demand) tourists a tip on the middle of the ride. Plus, when you get back on shore, you’re coerced to buy some food for your rower. Since I had already experienced the awesome boat ride in Trang An, I decided I could live without it. A great alternative option to explore the rice fields is on a bike. It’s hassle-free, way more adventurous and cheaper in the end. Cycling along the paddies, waving to the people working in the fields and getting up close with some cute animals on the way felt like the absolute right choice!

Bich Dong Pagoda

If you’re coming from Tam Coc, the road to Bich Dong Pagoda is simply gorgeous. At a given point, you’ll be surrounded by huge rice fields with limestone cliffs as a backdrop. Definitely worthy of stopping for some selfie moments! Bich Dong Pagoda itself is a set of 3 temples enclosed in a mountain. To explore the highest one you need to pass through a series of caves. At some point it’s pitch dark inside, so watch your step! Inside you can find several Buddhist images carved in stone and hollow stalactites on which you can play some tunes. Some of these caves were used by the Viet Minh to hide from the French during the First Indochina War.

Hang Mua

Everyone addresses this place as the Hang Mua Caves, but to be honest the caves are nothing special. In fact, if I had it skip completely, I wouldn’t have missed anything. Even the ones in Thung Nham Bird Park are better IMHO. The real appeal of this place lies on the temple on top of the mountain. You can see the set of stairs to get there from a distance. It’s a fair climb of almost 500 (!) steps. Yes, it’s exhausting, especially because they are uneven – some are really tiny, others can be made for giants. But don’t get discouraged. Once you have had this proper workout, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular 360° view over the Tam Coc valley. The views over the countryside and paddy fields are truly amazing. There’s no better place to catch your breath and find your inner zen again. Totally worth the effort, believe me.

Thung Nham Bird Park

During my research about Ninh Binh, I’ve NEVER heard of this place. It was the lovely girl on the reception of our hotel that not only suggested us to go to Thung Nham but offered to be our guide there! For those who love nature and an adventurous bird-watching trip, the natural reserve of Thung Nham (Nham Valley) is a must go. Deeply enclosed in the mountains, it’s a place with great natural beauty with many underwater caves and rivers. The Hang But (Buddhist Cave) is one of the largest. With lots of stalactites and stalagmites inside sitting beside an underground river, going inside is quite an adventure. A total of 150 different animals (beware of the snakes!) and more than 40 species of birds – some of them critically endangered species – can be found in Thung Nham. There are so many there’s even a place inside dedicated to them – the Bird Park. We took the boat to watch the birds at dusk, the peak time for foraging birds. Picture a small rowing boat on the mangrove forests, with HUNDREDS of birds hanged on the trees, all wrapped around in a drop dead gorgeous forest. The only noise comes from the birds while the sun is setting in the background. Magical. I went there knowing absolutely nothing about this place and came back mesmerized (can’t thank you enough Trang!).

Where to stay In Ninh Binh

Don’t stay in Ninh Binh city. I can’t understand how people come to such a nature-gifted place and stay in an uninspiring and ugly city. Instead, base yourself in Tam Coc, in the countryside. It’s a much more pleasant small town close to the main attractions – including the rice fields. The only downside from the place we stayed (below) was the location: 2,5km from Tam Coc center, with all the shops and restaurants. On the other hand, we had a quieter location with much better views! Find your accommodation in Ninh Binh I usually use Booking.com to find accommodations. It’s safe, easy and reliable and you use my shortlist of the top-rated places to stay in Ninh Binh with WiFi included. Long waits are worth it! I suggest a party of 2 if you can make it happen, just because when you smell the delicious things coming out of the restaurant, you are not going to want to wait for a table to open for a big party! Local, fresh, and unique dishes that make home style breakfasts im used to with local flair such as AZ grown fruits and veggies or thick cut peppered bacon. Not to mention the REAL fresh squeezed orange juice. Servers are hit or miss. Last visit I had a gal completely forget to put our order in for about 20 minutes, but the kitchen is fast so it wasn't more than 15 minutes after she did that we had our food. Mickies Dairy Bar (often shortened to Mickies) is a 1950s style diner located in Madison, Wisconsin. Opened in 1946 by Mickey Weidman, and located just across the street from Camp Randall Stadium, it has become a popular game day tradition amongst many Badger fans. The diner is well known for its breakfast selections, especially the Scrambler, which is a large mound of potatoes, eggs, cheese, gravy, and a patrons' choice of other toppings. Mickies has also been featured on "Todd's Taste of the Town" during one of ESPN's college football broadcasts.
